As Iridium developed its GMDSS service, it underwent a multi-year process that included strict testing protocols, multiple reviews with panels of experts, and examinations to obtain Recognition from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and a Letter of Compliance from IMO’s GMDSS regulator, the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO). Furthermore, IMSO conducts quarterly examinations of Iridium’s operations to ensure that they continue to be in compliance with the IMO’s requirements.

Iridium is providing unprecedented coverage by enabling GMDSS satellite services around the entire globe, including over the Arctic and Antarctic waters in Sea Area A4, even in adverse weather.

Iridium GMDSS distress services are available at no charge to subscribers. There are a number of commercial plans available to cover standard calling and data communications through Iridium Connected equipment, including GMDSS terminals. Iridium Connected GMDSS terminals can work alongside existing GMDSS equipment to add services and improve coverage.

Iridium GMDSS has launched with a majority of METAREAs and NAVAREAs broadcasting information to vessels with Iridium Connected equipment. If a METAREA or NAVAREA coordinator does not send their information to the Iridium GMDSS system, then the vessel will not receive the weather and navigation broadcasts for that region, though GMDSS Distress Alert and Safety Voice will still be available. Iridium continues to work with the remaining METAREAs and NAVAREAs to bring this critical safety information to vessels traveling anywhere in the world.  Vessel owners should always consult with their flag administration and Port State Authorities to ensure they are operating in a compliant manner.

The Iridium network is a trusted provider of safety and security services to more than 50,000 vessels around the world (80 percent of which are non-SOLAS). Many smaller, non-SOLAS vessels rely on GMDSS and other safety services to allow their crews to feel truly safe anywhere at sea.

Iridium GMDSS allows ships to quickly send definitive location and identification information to a Rescue Coordination Centers (RCC) and speak to an RCC operator to share key distress information, within 30 seconds of pressing the red distress button. Additionally, Iridium GMDSS includes Iridium SafetyCastSM, which delivers important navigational and meteorological information to vessels with Iridium onboard, enabling proactive safety measures. Iridium’s global GMDSS services could have a significant effect on the success of a Search and Rescue operation. 

Iridium GMDSS services are currently available exclusively through Lars Thrane’s LT-3100S GMDSS system, which operates on Iridium’s narrowband services.

 

Iridium Certus maritime equipment manufacturers are currently working with Iridium to meet regulatory requirements to offer GMDSS through their terminals as well. More details will be shared as the process continues.

Iridium GMDSS Equipment: LT-3100S

Lars Thrane manufactures the first Iridium Connected® GMDSS terminal, LT-3100S. Iridium Certus maritime equipment manufacturers Cobham, Thales, and Intellian are currently working with Iridium to develop auxiliary equipment for their existing broadband terminals to offer GMDSS through the Iridium Certus platform. More details will be shared as the process continues.

Iridium GMDSS enhances safety at sea, offering reliable coverage where Inmarsat does not, including Arctic and Antarctic waters in Sea Area A4. Unlike the historic solution, the LT-3100S GMDSS System comes standard with functionality for all satellite GMDSS services: Distress Alert, Safety Voice, and Maritime Safety Information (MSI). Plus, Iridium Connected GMDSS terminals initiate both Distress Alert and Safety Voice quickly at the press of a button.

Iridium Equipment used to comply with SOLAS must be Type Approved by their Flag State. For vessels that are not using Iridium GMDSS Equipment to comply with SOLAS requirements (such as non-SOLAS vessels), Type Approval is not an issue.

In December 2020, the European Union’s Marine Equipment Directive (MED) type-approved the LT-3100S. This approval is recognized by all members of the European Union, as well as many other countries. The United States, Canada, and Marshall Islands have independently type-approved the LT-3100S. Lars Thrane continues to receive additional approvals. As always, vessel owners are ultimately responsible for working with their flag administration and Port State Authorities on all compliance questions.

Yes, the process for cancelling a Distress Alarm on the LT-3100S is quite simple and easy. When the Red Button is pressed to activate a Distress Alert, an option to cancel the Distress Alert appears on the screen. The operator can simply select this option and confirm the cancellation. Once a Distress Alert has been cancelled, the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) will be notified. Please note that the RCC may still follow-up with the vessel.

The LT-3100S should be connected to an approved GMDSS power supply along with the other GMDSS communications equipment to ensure ongoing connectivity in the event of power loss. 

Iridium Certus maritime equipment manufacturers Cobham, Thales, and Intellian are currently working with Iridium to develop auxiliary equipment for their existing broadband terminals to offer GMDSS through the Iridium Certus platform. More details will be shared as the process continues.

Rescue Coordination Centres (RCCs)

Within 10 seconds of being activated, the LT-3100S terminal displays a “delivered” notification, indicating that Iridium’s centralized GMDSS system has received the Distress Alert. Once the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) has acknowledged their receipt of the Distress Alert, the terminal will display an “acknowledged” notification.

 

After the first “Distress” notification, the terminal will automatically initiate a Distress Call from the terminal to the RCC, allowing those onboard to share additional details about the distress situation, including the nature of the emergency and other information, such as how many people are on-board.

The default for GMDSS services is the international maritime language “Seaspeak”, which is based on English. However, Iridium GMDSS users can select a specific Rescue Coordination Centre from their own region or country for all emergency communications, regardless of vessel location. If the on-board coordinators cannot speak English or Seaspeak, this is recommended.

Maritime Safety Information (MSI) / Iridium SafetyCastSM

Maritime Safety Information (MSI) is transmitted through an Enhanced Group Call (EGC) service called Iridium SafetyCast. The main type of information broadcast through this service is navigational and meteorological information and warnings. Depending on location, additional information, such as anti-piracy and ice reports, may be available. RCCs can also broadcast safety-related information through Iridium SafetyCast.

All international EGC broadcasts are sent in English; however, some Coastal Warning information may be sent in a national language.

In addition to supporting all three satellite GMDSS services in one terminal, Iridium Connected GMDSS equipment enables other safety and non-safety capabilities including shore-to-ship distress calling, maritime assistance, and standard calling and messaging (SMS).

You have a choice of an Iridium Certus terminal and airtime subscription (as stated as available in the Optima Terms and Conditions); all other elements of the AST Optima package are mandatory. Any non-standard peripherals or accessories (e.g. phones, handsets, non-standard cables, etc.) are available at extra cost and must be paid up front or to agreed terms.

Insurance, installation and airtime overage are specifically excluded from the AST optima Package. Only the elements described in point 3 of the AST Optima Package terms and conditions (available via our website Terms and Conditions – Blue Sky Satellite Communications (bluesky-sat.com) are expressly included, everything else will be deemed as excluded.

You can choose from three maritime terminals (Cobham SAILOR 4300 or Thales VesseLINK or Intellian C700) and one land terminal (Thales MissionLINK).

The Cobham SAILOR 4300 19” rackmount terminal and the Intellian C700 19” rackmount terminal are not included as standard with the AST Optima Package but are available as an option. To discuss this option please refer to your Account Manager.

Not all airtime costs are included, for example, you would need to pay for any airtime over your subscription’s specified airtime allowance (data overage, voice). However, the AST Optima Package includes ASTs INTEGRA Control service which allows you to pro-actively manage and control, in real-time, the applications using your satellite connection, and therefore avoid or limit data overage charges.

The AST Optima Package has been designed so that no upfront payments are necessary, and costs associated with the hardware are spread over the agreed term.

The 36-month contract starts from the date of activation. Please refer to point 17 of the AST Optima package Terms and Conditions (available via our website Terms and Conditions – Blue Sky Satellite Communications (bluesky-sat.com) for additional activation conditions.

The contract is a fixed term of 36 months.

Title of goods for hardware does not pass from Blue Sky Satellite Communications to the customer until the final payment is received by AST through Blue Sky Satellite Communications at the end of the 36-month term.

Yes, 36-month warranty is included in the AST Optima Package.

No, In purchasing the AST Optima package, the customer agrees to have adequate insurance in place for the full 36-month term, to the MSRP replacement value of the hardware. (Cobham 4300, Thales VesseLINK and Intellian C700 MSRP is $8995, Thales MissionLINK MSRP is $8195).

Yes, in accordance with the AST Optima Package terms and conditions (available via our website Terms and Conditions – Blue Sky Satellite Communications (bluesky-sat.com).

Yes, the hardware must be activated to use; activation instructions are supplied with the shipped hardware. Any hardware not activated by the customer within 30 days will be invoiced at the MSRP stated in point 7 of the AST Optima Package terms and conditions (available via our website Terms and Conditions – Blue Sky Satellite Communications (bluesky-sat.com).

Upgrades and downgrades are permitted in accordance with the AST Optima Package terms and conditions. In the first instance please refer to our terms and conditions (available via our website Terms and Conditions – Blue Sky Satellite Communications (bluesky-sat.com); or contact your Account Manager.

Yes. In purchasing the AST Optima package, the customer agrees to have adequate insurance in place for the full 36-month term, to the MSRP replacement value of the hardware. Please refer to your Insurance Broker as necessary. At the end of the 36-month term, once the final payment is received by AST the title of goods for hardware will pass from AST to the customer via Blue Sky Satellite Communications. After the end of the term, your invoice will reflect the charges for the individual elements of INTEGRA Control, IRIS (Thales terminals only) and airtime subscription, but no hardware charges.

At the end of the 36-month term, once the final payment is received by AST  through Blue Sky satellite Communications the title of goods for hardware will pass from AST to the customer.

At the end of the term, assuming all payments have been made in accordance with the agreement, there are no additional charges and you will receive ownership of the hardware. Title of goods for hardware does not pass from AST to the customer until the final payment is received by AST  through Blue Sky Satellite Communications at the end of the 36-month term.

The AST Optima Package has been specifically designed to offer the best value for money options of AST value added services, Iridium Certus hardware and airtime in one convenient monthly fee and this includes ASTs flagship INTEGRA Control Service. It is not possible to opt for one of the other INTEGRA Services instead.

The contract period cannot be extended.

Fleet Xpress delivers high data speeds enabled by Inmarsat’s Global Xpress Ka-band technology combined with the proven reliability of Inmarsat’s FleetBroadband L-band service. Provides a minimum throughput of 580kbps with its full channel option, but users can expect to see an average speed of 600-700kbps, reaching as high as 800kbps.

You can double the streaming rates by bonding two terminals together, enabling connection speeds over 1Mbps, which was previously only possible on a VSAT uplink. To obtain such speeds it is necessary to use special hardware server. Morsviazsputnik recommends to use its own server to recieve a bounding service.

The EXPLORER 510 satellite terminal is a global WiFi hotspot with Internet speeds of up to 464 Kbps to any in-range wireless device such as laptops, tablets and smartphones. Successfully launched on Sunday April 26, 2015 at
20:00 UTC, from the Guiana Space Centre, THOR 7 is Telenor Satellite’s first growth satellite, delivering satellite services for the future expansion requirements of all the markets in which we operate.

 

THOR 7’s HTS Ka-band payload is highly suited to the mobility VSAT market. Offering 6-9 Gbps throughput with up to 25 simultaneously active spot beams, THOR 7 provides services with download speeds in the tens of Mbps, even from small antennas, and delivers uplink speeds anywhere up to 6Mbps (depending on antenna
size).

exponentially, due to the increased use of IPapplications. Coverage and Performance

 

THOR 7 targets the North Sea, North Atlantic/ Norwegian Sea, Baltic Sea, Black Sea,

Caspian Sea, Red Sea, Persian Gulf and Mediterranean. Its HTS payload uses more concentrated spot beams which deliver higher performance than a conventional beam. Therefore, Telenor Satellite is able to deliver cost-effective solutions, supporting higher speeds for users with smaller antennas.


We understand that reliability is crucial to support mission critical applications. To ensure teleport availability well above 99.95 percent, Telenor Satellite has invested in a package of solutions to mitigate rain fade including a secondary uplink site to provide antenna diversity.

Supported by the iDirect next generation VelocityTM platform, Telenor Satellite is able to offer VNO service solutions on its fixed beams, similar to those that we provide on our Ku-band iDirect platform.


The iDirect platform offers automatic and seamless spot beam handover; a necessity for a market that relies upon continuous connectivity. The iDirect platform also allows service plans to be designed for large VSAT service providers as well as smaller resellers and includes sophisticated bandwidth management of all the THOR 7 spot beams, allowing bandwidth spread across multiple beams to be treated as a single large capacity pool.
